About Whois Lookup
Whois Lookup is a free online tool that retrieves the registration and ownership information for any domain name from the Whois database. Enter a domain and the tool returns the registrar, registration date, expiry date, name servers, and (where not privacy-protected) registrant contact information.
Whois is one of the oldest internet protocols, dating to 1982, predating the World Wide Web. It was originally a simple text database storing the contact information of everyone who registered a domain. Today it is a globally distributed service maintained by domain registrars and country code registries that provides a searchable record of domain registration metadata.
The information available from a Whois lookup includes: domain registrar (the company where the domain is registered — GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains), registration date and expiry date, last updated date, name servers (the DNS servers responsible for the domain), registrant name and organisation (often privacy-protected in modern registrations), and contact email addresses (often masked).
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and similar privacy laws have significantly changed Whois data availability since 2018. Registrants in GDPR-covered regions (Europe, UK) and those using WHOIS privacy protection services now have their personal contact details redacted in the public Whois database. Abuse contact information and registrar details remain available. Law enforcement and intellectual property rights holders can request full records through official channels.
Common use cases include checking whether a domain you want to register is truly available or just parked, investigating the legitimacy of a suspicious website or email, researching when a competitor's domain expires, verifying the registrar before initiating a domain transfer, and conducting due diligence on a domain purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most registrars offer Whois privacy protection (sometimes called domain privacy) that replaces the registrant's personal details with the registrar's proxy contact information. This is now the default on most new domain registrations to comply with GDPR and protect registrants from spam and harassment.
The expiry date is shown in the Whois record as "Registry Expiry Date" or "Expires On". Domains that expire are typically placed in a redemption period before being released for re-registration. Monitoring expiry dates is important for domain owners to avoid accidental lapses.
Not through public Whois. You can contact the registrar's abuse team for legitimate legal or copyright concerns. For business or trademark disputes, ICANN's UDRP (Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy) process can compel disclosure.
Whois shows domain registration metadata — who registered it, when, and at which registrar. DNS lookup shows the technical configuration — which IP address the domain points to, which mail servers handle its email, etc. Both are useful for domain investigation but answer different questions.
