An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. It serves two primary purposes: network host identification (who you are) and location addressing (where you are for routing purposes). There are two IP address versions in use: IPv4 (32-bit, written as four decimal numbers like 192.168.1.1) and IPv6 (128-bit, written as eight groups of hexadecimal digits like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334).
Your "public" IP address is the address assigned to your internet connection by your ISP — visible to every website and server you connect to. It is different from your "private" IP address (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x), which is your address within your local network (home router) and not visible on the internet. This tool shows your public IP — the address the outside world sees.
IP geolocation uses databases that map IP address ranges to approximate geographic locations. The accuracy varies: country-level identification is highly accurate (99%+); city-level identification is typically within 25–50 km for most IPs, though more precise for static business IPs and less precise for mobile and ISP-assigned residential IPs. VPN users will see the IP and location of the VPN server, not their physical location.
