About Internet Speed Test

Internet Speed Test is a free online tool that measures your internet connection's download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) in real time. Click "Start Test" and within 30–60 seconds you have an accurate measurement of your actual internet performance at your current location and time.

Internet speed is measured in Megabits per second (Mbps) or Gigabits per second (Gbps). Download speed is how fast data transfers from the internet to your device — relevant for streaming video, loading web pages, downloading files, and video calls. Upload speed is how fast data transfers from your device to the internet — relevant for video conferencing, uploading files, live streaming, and cloud backups. Latency (ping) is the round-trip time for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back — measured in milliseconds. Low latency is critical for online gaming, video calls, and real-time applications.

Your measured speed may differ from your subscribed plan speed. ISPs advertise "up to" speeds — actual speeds depend on network congestion at your local exchange, the distance and quality of your connection to the ISP infrastructure, the quality of your home router and ethernet/Wi-Fi connection, the number of simultaneous users on your connection, and VPN or proxy usage. Running the test over a wired ethernet connection eliminates Wi-Fi variables and typically gives higher, more consistent results.

Practical speed requirements for common activities: Standard Definition video streaming (Netflix SD, YouTube 480p) needs 3–5 Mbps. Full HD streaming (1080p) needs 5–25 Mbps. 4K streaming needs 25+ Mbps. HD video calls (Zoom, Teams) need 1.5–3 Mbps upload and download per participant. Online gaming needs 3–6 Mbps download but requires low latency (under 50 ms for competitive games). Working from home with multiple devices needs 50+ Mbps for a comfortable household connection.

How to Use Internet Speed Test

  1. 1Click "Start Test" to begin the speed measurement
  2. 2Wait 30–60 seconds for the test to complete
  3. 3View your download speed, upload speed, and ping (latency)
  4. 4Run the test at different times of day to identify congestion patterns
  5. 5Compare results over wired and Wi-Fi connections to diagnose home network issues

Frequently Asked Questions

For a single user: 25 Mbps download is sufficient for most activities. For a household with multiple simultaneous streams and devices: 100–200 Mbps is comfortable. For heavy use (4K streaming, large uploads, gaming): 500 Mbps+ is ideal. Upload speed of at least 10 Mbps is needed for smooth video conferencing.

Actual speeds are always below the advertised maximum due to network congestion, line quality, router limitations, and Wi-Fi signal. Typical real-world performance is 60–80% of the advertised maximum. Test over a wired connection for the most accurate result.

Ping (latency) is the round-trip time for a data packet between your device and the test server, measured in milliseconds. Under 20 ms is excellent. 20–50 ms is good. 50–100 ms is acceptable. Over 100 ms causes noticeable delays in video calls and gaming. Ping is primarily affected by physical distance to the server and network congestion.

Yes, typically by 10–30%. VPN encryption and the routing overhead of sending all traffic through a VPN server adds latency and reduces throughput. The impact varies by VPN service quality and server distance. Test with and without VPN to measure the difference.
