Develop evidence of useful engineering skills

Choose skills that match the advertised role. For electronics roles, useful foundations include analog and digital circuits, signals, communications, control, measurements and embedded systems. An unrelated certificate does not replace an accepted degree or required examination score.

Practical skills

• Read a schematic, trace power rails and explain component choices.
• Use a multimeter, oscilloscope and logic analyzer within their ratings. Record measurement setup, uncertainty and limitations.
• Write and test embedded C, explain interrupts and peripheral interfaces, and diagnose timing or communication faults.
• For a communications role, practice link budgets, noise calculations and spectrum interpretation.
• For a digital-design role, build a small RTL module with a testbench and explain setup/hold timing.
• Maintain clear test reports, version-controlled code and a reproducible build or experiment procedure.

Select certifications deliberately

Check the job description first. Assess whether a course has practical exercises and a credible assessment, whether its tools are accessible and whether its cost fits your budget. No certificate guarantees a PSU interview, eligibility or appointment. Mandatory training or licensing, if any, comes from the specific notice or employer.

A four-week project

Week 1: specify a low-voltage sensor logger and choose a safe interface. Week 2: implement acquisition and timestamping. Week 3: test known inputs, dropped samples and communication faults. Week 4: produce a schematic, code, test table and a short discussion of accuracy and limitations.

Interview evidence

Explain the problem, your own contribution, a measured result, a failure you investigated and a tradeoff. Never describe simulated results as hardware measurements or a team member's work as your own.
