The world is divided into 24 primary time zones based on the Earth's rotation, with each zone offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) by a whole number of hours. In practice, time zone boundaries follow country and regional borders rather than strict longitudinal lines, producing numerous half-hour offsets (India: UTC+5:30, Iran: UTC+3:30, Afghanistan: UTC+4:30, Nepal: UTC+5:45) and political decisions (China uses a single time zone UTC+8 despite spanning five geographic zones).
Daylight Saving Time (DST) — also called Summer Time — adds significant complexity. Approximately 70 countries advance clocks by one hour in summer to extend evening daylight. The transition dates differ between regions: the US and Canada switch on the second Sunday in March and first Sunday in November; most of Europe switches on the last Sunday of March and October; Australia and Southern Hemisphere countries switch in opposite months. Some countries recently abandoned DST permanently (Russia in 2014, several US states have proposed bills).
For global business, time zone management is a constant operational challenge. A meeting scheduled for 9 AM EST excludes team members in India who would join at 7:30 PM IST and is near midnight for Sydney. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks. It does not observe daylight saving time and does not change with seasons, making it the stable reference point from which all other time zones are defined as offsets (e.g. IST = UTC+5:30, EST = UTC−5).
DST shifts the effective UTC offset by +1 hour during summer months. The converter accounts for DST transitions automatically based on the selected date — a conversion for January and July between the same two time zones may give different results if one or both regions observe DST.
There is no perfect overlap for truly global meetings. Common compromises include UTC (neutral reference) or rotating meeting times to share the inconvenience fairly. For US-Europe: 8–10 AM EST (1–3 PM GMT) works for both. For US-India: early morning US time avoids late-night India.
IST stands for Indian Standard Time, which is UTC+5:30. India does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so IST remains constant throughout the year. It is one of the few major time zones with a 30-minute offset.
