Foreign exchange (forex) markets operate 24 hours a day, five days a week, and are the largest financial markets in the world with over $7 trillion traded daily. Exchange rates fluctuate continuously based on interest rate differentials between countries, economic data releases, political events, trade balances, and market sentiment. The rate you see at a currency converter is the mid-market rate (the midpoint between buy and sell rates) — the rate banks and services actually charge includes a spread on top of this rate.

Understanding the difference between the mid-market rate and the rate you are charged matters for significant currency exchanges. Banks typically charge 2–5% above the mid-market rate. Airport exchange counters charge 5–10%. Money transfer services like Wise (formerly TransferWise) and Revolut offer rates much closer to the mid-market rate, saving substantial amounts on large transfers. For a ₹10 lakh (≈$12,000) transfer, the difference between a 1% and 5% spread is ₹48,000.

The most traded currency pairs in the world are EUR/USD (euro vs US dollar), USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, USD/CAD, AUD/USD, and NZD/USD — collectively called the "major pairs." These pairs have the highest liquidity and tightest spreads. Currency pairs involving emerging market currencies like INR, BRL, ZAR, and TRY typically have wider spreads and more volatility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rates are updated regularly from financial data sources. For financial transactions, always verify the exact rate with your bank or transfer service, as rates change continuously and a small spread is applied on actual transactions.

This tool shows the mid-market rate. Banks, airports, and exchange services add a margin (spread) to cover their costs and profit, resulting in a worse rate for the customer. Online money transfer services typically offer rates closer to the mid-market rate.

The Swiss Franc (CHF) and Singapore Dollar (SGD) are traditionally considered among the most stable currencies. The US Dollar (USD) is the world's primary reserve currency and the standard for international trade pricing.

Use the mid-market rate from this tool as a baseline, then add 2–4% to account for the spread charged by your bank or exchange service. This gives a realistic estimate for budgeting. For large amounts, compare rates across banks and services before exchanging.
