Practice questions

These are original preparation questions, not a claim that the company asked them.

1. How do you find the first repeated value in a sequence? Scan from left to right, storing values in a set; the first value already in the set is the answer. Expected time is O(n) with a hash set and O(n) additional space; specify how hash collisions and input constraints affect the implementation.

2. What is the difference between a process and a thread? Processes normally have separate address spaces; threads in one process share its address space and resources. Shared mutable data needs synchronization, and one thread's memory corruption can affect the entire process.

3. How do you prevent SQL injection? Use parameterized queries so input values are separated from SQL syntax. Validate permitted input and apply least-privilege database access; concatenating escaped-looking strings is not a substitute for parameters.

4. How would you test a sensor-data application? Test normal readings, limits, invalid input, disconnects, timing gaps and restart behavior. Use reproducible fixtures and verify both the reported value and error handling; distinguish simulation from hardware measurements.

5. What does volatile mean in embedded C? It tells the implementation that accesses to the object are observable and must follow the language's volatile rules, useful for supported memory-mapped I/O and some asynchronously changed objects. It does not by itself provide atomicity, a mutex or cross-thread synchronization.

6. How do you debug an intermittent failure? Record conditions, versions and timestamps, reduce the case and form a testable hypothesis. Instrument carefully, investigate races or resource limits, and add a regression check once the cause is established.
